PETITION – MSL Test Moratorium

For the past decade, high-stakes standardized tests have eroded the quality of American public education. But despite the well-documented problems with these tests, their numbers continue to grow.

At a time of shrinking school budgets, rising class sizes and plummeting teacher morale, the last thing our schools need is yet another wave of expensive, time-consuming high-stakes tests.

For the benefit of all children in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, I support the call for the CMS Superintendent and Board of Education to place a moratorium on the administration of the new Measures of Student Learning (MSLs) within CMS.

I also call on the U.S. Department of Education to release North Carolina and other states from these excessive testing mandates, and instead encourage assessment of the actual work that students and teachers do throughout a school year.
